Rev. Matthew J. Wissell, GM, 33°
Welcome to the web presence of the Grottoes of North America. It is my pleasure and honor to serve as the Grand Monarch or national chairman of our organization.
You might be viewing this page because you are asking the question “What is Grotto?” The answer begins with what you first saw when you opened this site: “The Grottoes of North America is a non-profit organization, dedicated to promoting Goodfellowship, Friendship and Fun amongst Master Masons.”
Master Masons are taught when they join the Craft about the importance of Brotherly Love. The nature of our obligations are designed to help facilitate Brotherly Love. The things we agree to do and not to do toward one another, help us eliminate some basic activities that destroy relationships. They also have us engage in behaviors that build relationships up. There are things we do not discuss in a lodge communication for exactly that reason. It is obvious that the founders of our fraternity intended for us promote actions that bond us together and avoid actions that drive us apart.
Leroy Fairchild and the brothers of Hamilton Lodge #120 sought to deeper their relationships outside the formality and protocol of the Lodge. Out of that dream and desire, they formed the Grotto. They created a space where Master Masons can enjoy one another’s company and deepen the bonds of brotherly love and friendship between them. They provided an arena for them to laugh and have fun. They made us a forum where they could display and share their best selves. That is what the Grotto is.
Grottoes meet in their own buildings, Masonic Lodges, restaurants, and various meeting halls. Many have bands, parade, and clown units. Grottoes also support our Humanitarian Foundation, which guides our charitable endeavors. We enjoy having a good time and helping others.
I invite you to explore this site and hopefully be inspired by what you see and read. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact us and we will do our best to be of assistance to you.
